Who's Hungry?
Working family turns to pantry for help
Jesse and Dale Reneé Schick of Alvadore know that having a job is no guarantee against hunger. The Schicks are one of many working Lane County families who don't make enough to pay all their bills and still purchase a sufficient supply of food to feed their family of five. When Jesse's full-time construction job didn't cover the bills, he applied for food stamps. Dale Reneé stretches the family's food dollars even further with a food box from the local pantry, where she also volunteers.
Every two years, FOOD for Lane County surveys Lane County food box recipients to better understand why people seek help from food pantries, to better serve Lane County residents in need and to focus attention on the root causes of hunger.
High unemployment, low wages, a shortage of affordable housing, high medical costs or the absence of health insurance - all of these put Lane County families at risk.
