Q: Where does the food come from?

A: Almost all of the food that FOOD for Lane County distributes is donated, not purchased. The food comes from the following sources:

                   7%     Local food drives
                 15%     United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
                 19%     Oregon Food Bank
                 55%     Local Businesses
                   2%     FFLC gardens
                   2%     Summer Food Program

Q: Does FOOD For Lane County buy food?

A: FFLC distributes food that has been donated, rescued, harvested, prepared and packaged. Typically, we do not buy the food we distribute because the majority is donated. However, when donations are specified for food purchase, we strive to purchase healthy foods.

 

Q: Where does the food go? How does it get distributed?

A: The food is distributed through a countywide network of partner agencies - other nonprofit organizations who partner with FFLC to receive the food and distribute it directly to people in need. The food is distributed through the following ways:

                   9%      Emergency Meal Sites & Shelters     558,775 lbs.
                   6%      Non-emergency Partner Agencies    371,805 lbs.
                   2%      Summer Food Program                  149,536 lbs.
                 >1%      Cereal for Youth                             20,755 lbs.

                                   TOTAL POUNDS DISTRIBUTED 6,466,696 lbs.

 

Q: How nutritious is the food you distribute?

A: We believe that emergency food assistance should be wholesome and nutritious - not just fill stomachs with empty calories. The food distributed in 2008-09 had the following characteristics:

                 21%    Proteins, complete meals, soups, baby food, and formula
                 17%    Juice, dairy products, and ice cream
                 16%    Produce, fresh
                 13%    Canned foods, mixed
                   9%    Fruits and vegetables, canned or frozen
                   8%    Breads and sweets
                   7%    Cereal, grains, pasta and rice
                   1%    Prepared foods for meal sites
                   1%    Pet food
                   1%    Non-food items
                   6%    Miscellaneous (beverages, sauces, dressings, condiments, spices, etc.)

 

Q: Who donates to FOOD for Lane County? Where do your monetary donations come from?

A: FOOD for Lane County depends on the generosity of many different funders.

                 30%   Individuals*
                 25%   Grants**
                 23%   Government
                 11%   Corporations
                   5%   United Way
                   3%   Programs income
                   3%   Other income

         *Thirty-three percent of donations from individuals are gifts of $1,000 and above.
       **In 2008-09, FOOD For Lane County received a one-time grant for $600,000. A typical year is 10% from grants.

 

Q: How much of your revenue goes to programs?

A: Of the revenue FFLC receives from all sources, 95% gets spent on program functions. Only 5% is spent on strictly administrative costs.
