Thanks to a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, FOOD for Lane County is expanding its Summer Food Program up the McKenzie River, adding sites in Vida, Blue River and McKenzie Bridge.
The expanded program has the potential to serve 290 children who attend schools in the McKenzie School District.
“We’re extremely excited to be able to serve this area,” said Program Coordinator Karen Roth. “It’s something we’ve been looking forward to for years.”
McKenzie Bridge Elementary School was one of several sites added last year to the program, which serves hot, nutritious meals to children five days a week at more than 60 sites located throughout Lane County. FOOD for Lane County operates the largest Summer Food Program in the state.
Advocating for Summer Food
Roth has been working with the Commissions on Children and Families in Multnomah, Tillamook and Douglas counties to support them in expanding their local Summer Food Service Programs. She works closely with the Lane County Commission on Children and Families to promote the program locally.
“This is a popular program, but we know that thousands of eligible children are not being served,” said Roth. “Each year we increase our outreach efforts to reach more children.”
