GrassRoots Garden

The two and a half-acre GrassRoots Garden is located behind St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 1465 Coburg Road in Eugene. The garden is developed and maintained by FOOD for Lane County staff, Master Gardeners, school groups, youth from diverse backgrounds and community members all working to make a difference.

GrassRoots began in 1991 as a partnership between Lane County Master Gardeners, FOOD for Lane County and St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Master Gardeners wanted a training location that allowed them to be of service to the community, FFLC wanted a source of fresh produce for its food distribution program and St. Thomas had available vacant land.

Community support and dedication to this garden is tremendous. A number of volunteers have been with the garden since the beginning. Several youth service programs bring their students year after year. Business work teams donate a portion of their workday to help with garden tasks. Families, school and church groups, as well as individuals from varied backgrounds are regularly involved in growing fruits and vegetables. Diverse volunteer opportunities include carpentry jobs, irrigation and small farm machinery maintenance, green house activities and data entry as well as soil preparation, planting, weeding and harvesting.

All are welcome to lend assistance, regardless of their background or skill level. Working in the garden is a way to be directly involved in growing food that families and friends receive through FOOD for Lane County’s hunger relief programs.

Learning opportunities include structured workshops. GrassRoots Garden is a compost demonstration site for the City of Eugene as well as a pruning and compost training site for Lane County Master Gardeners. Compost specialists conduct regular free workshops on composting that are open to the public.

You are also invited to help by supporting the Adopt-A-Plot Program, an annual Christmas tree and wreath sale, a spring fruit tree sale and a summer cut-flower sale.
