Sheldon High School Hosts
Farm to School Pilot Project

FOOD for Lane County is excited to be involved in a partnership that gives students the opportunity to eat fresh, local organic salad on campus and meet local farmers. From April 19 to May 8, students at Sheldon High School were encouraged to taste fresh, locally grown food at their own local salad bar. The Farm to School pilot project was made possible through a collaboration between the Eugene School District 4J Nutrition Services (Sodexho), FFLC, the Be Involved To End (BITE) Hunger Youth Group, the Lane County Food Coalition, local farmers and involved community members.

Farm to School projects incorporate locally grown food into schools, paired with school gardens, curricula around growing food and contact with local farms. Communities across the nation are investing in these projects as a way to improve child nutrition, teach youth to grow and prepare their own food, and support local family farms. School districts are finding this integrated approach can raise consumption of healthy produce by as much as 40 percent. For many students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals, school lunches can be the only complete meal they receive each day.

The idea for Eugene’s pilot project came out of the Let’s Talk Food forums sponsored by FFLC and the Lane County Food Coalition. High school students and community members approached Sodexho which was already seeking ways to involve more students in eating nutritious produce and agreed to sponsor the project. Responses from students, teachers, administrators and parents have been overwhelmingly positive. If successful, the project could expand to other schools and link to further efforts to educate students about food.
