EUGENE, Oregon (July 11, 2005) -- After a year-long campaign encouraging people to SCAN-a-Coupon at various businesses throughout town, FOOD for Lane County today revealed that the community donated $160,345.
This was well over the amount necessary to meet a challenge given FOOD for Lane County by Meyer Memorial Trust one year ago. Meyer Memorial Trust offered the agency $75,000 if it could inspire community members to donate $150,000 through the SCAN-a-Coupon program over a 12-month period.
“The Meyer challenge was considerable and a bit scary,” said Pat Farr, Executive Director of FOOD for Lane County. “ In order to meet it, we had to double the amount the SCAN program had raised the year before. This success shows how our community can rally around a challenge to eliminate hunger locally.”
The SCAN-a-Coupon program provides a quick and easy way for people to donate to local hunger relief programs by scanning $1, $5, or $10 coupons at the checkout stands in grocery stores and other area retailers.
The SCAN fundraising program has been very successful in select local businesses since the program’s inception in 1996. This year, as in years past, Market of Choice customers donated the most SCAN dollars. “Over $10,000 worth of coupons were scanned at the three local Market of Choice stores in June alone,” said Farr. “All the SCAN partner business will continue to offer the SCAN coupons as an ongoing fundraiser for FOOD for Lane County. SCAN has become a most important grass roots fundraiser for hunger relief.”
In addition to thanking everyone who scanned coupons last year, Farr praised the efforts of Liz Cawood, who contributed the services of her public relations firm to help FOOD for Lane County develop and manage the year-long SCAN-a-Coupon campaign. “Liz’s personal dedication to hunger relief is amazing,” said Farr. “Her contribution, and that of her staff, took our SCAN program to a new level, and will make a huge difference in our ability to feed the hungry in our county.”
Meyer Memorial Trust’s $75,000, combined with the $160,345 donated by the community, amounts to $235,345 and will allow FOOD for Lane County to distribute approximately 1,412,000 pounds of food to its network of 100 agencies and programs feeding Lane County neighbors in need.
FOOD for Lane County will distribute about seven million pounds of food this year and feed more than 80,000 Lane County residents (one in every five people.) In addition, nearly one in three Lane County children has eaten from a food box in the past year.
