Questions and answers about Hurricane Katrina Diaster Response

EUGENE, Oregon (August 31, 2005) -- With heavy flooding and power outages and millions of people in the Gulf Coast in need of food and water, the impact on food banks in the Gulf States is enormous.

The America’s Second Harvest Network of food banks and food-rescue organizations needs funds to help victims in states impacted by Hurricane Katrina. At least 10 food banks and hundreds of local pantries and emergency shelters in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida have been hit by Katrina's force.

FOOD for Lane County is a member of the America's Second Harvest Network, the largest domestic hunger-relief agency.

"The fastest way people can help is by making a financial donation," said Robert Forney, president and CEO of America's Second Harvest. "Your financial support will enable the America's Second Harvest Network to serve the needs of disaster victims by transporting food, securing additional warehouse space and helping our food banks resume and maintain operations for those in need."

To make a financial donation, which will directly assist America's Second Harvest members in affected areas, go to www.secondharvest.org or call (800) 344-8070.

You may also donate through FOOD for Lane County. Send a check marked for hurricane relief to FOOD for Lane County, 770 Bailey Hill Road, Eugene, OR 97402. FOOD for Lane County will direct 100 percent of your donation to America's Second Harvest disaster relief fund.

At this time, America's Second Harvest has asked FOOD for Lane County not to send food. If the situation changes, we will post that information on our website.
