Golden Temple donates 30 tons of cereal
to FOOD for Lane County

EUGENE, Ore. (January 4, 2005) -- At 9:00am on Tuesday, January 4, just about the time many local people sit down for breakfast, over 30 tons of cereal will be donated for the hungry that wouldn’t otherwise have a breakfast.

FOOD for Lane County will pick up the first of four semi truck loads of Golden Temple cereal contributed by the company to the local food bank. The donation consists of 38,500 pounds of bulk cereal and 800 cases of packaged cereal weighing over 22,000 pounds. FOOD for Lane County will pass a share of it on to Oregon Food Bank to distribute to the rest of the statewide food bank network.

“This is an incredible donation at a time when it’s really needed,” said Pat Farr, Executive Director of FOOD for Lane County. “This cereal is a highly valued item. With this quantity, we will be able to distribute it over several months for emergency food boxes.”

A core value of Golden Temple and its management is sharing with others,” says CEO Kartar Singh Khalsa. “Our line of Peace Cereals donates 10% of its profit to responsible peace related efforts. We understand about feeding people, and Food for Lane County's efforts help promote peace in our own local community. It is important to us to participate in that as best we can.“

Golden Temple is growing and added a new cereal facility last year to expand its capacity and capabilities. In light of its recent expansion, Golden Temple was recently honored as one of three finalists for the Eugene Chamber of Commerce Emerald Award; acknowledging contributions toward long term sustainable job growth in Lane County.

”As a matter of course of business and new product development, we always have product to sell in secondary markets,” says Khalsa. “With our expansion the volume of that product has grown. We have decided to start the New Year with a charitable donation of that product, rather than a sale to market.”

“Golden Temple has always been a donor to the food bank,” emphasized Farr. “They are an example of a local employer recognizing the problem of hunger in our community and taking a big step toward addressing that problem through their contributions.”
