Albertsons donates $4,000 and a semi-truck load of food in honor of National Hunger Awareness Day

EUGENE, Ore. (June 7, 2005) -- FOOD for Lane County will join communities throughout the nation to raise awareness of hunger issues on National Hunger Awareness Day 2005.

In Eugene, Lane County Albertsons stores will deliver a semi-truck full of food and households items to FOOD for Lane County. While warehouse workers unload the truck, Albertsons Division Manager Randy Stewart will present a $4,000 check to FOOD for Lane County Executive Director Pat Farr.

Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy, local dignitaries, managers of seven area Albertsons stores and local news media have been invited to the event.

“We are thrilled to be able to share the spotlight on National Hunger Awareness Day with our corporate partner, Albertsons,” said Farr. ““This year Albertsons helped spearhead our Fresh Alliance program, a grocery store project that collects meats, dairy, deli and produce and safely moves pull date products into our distribution channels. Albertsons’ generosity and participation in Fresh Alliance is allowing us to increase the volume, variety and nutritional quality of food we distribute to our clients.”

Area Albertsons stores are donating on average 10,000 pounds of food a week through the Fresh Alliance program.

“Albertsons has also provided us with bags for smaller food drives in the area, donated volunteers in our kitchens and gardens and participated in the Great Food Drive and the Holiday Bag drive, which provided us with thousands of pounds of nutritious nonperishable foods for our emergency food box programs,” said Deb Buchanan, FOOD for Lane County food solicitor.

Local Albertsons stores donated 30,595 pounds of food and household items to FOOD for Lane County on last year’s National Hunger Awareness Day.

FOOD for Lane County’s mission is to alleviate hunger by creating access to food. This is accomplished by soliciting, collecting, rescuing, growing and preparing food for distribution through a network of 100 member agencies and programs; through public awareness, education and community advocacy; and through programs geared toward improving the ability of low-income families, seniors and children and other challenged populations to obtain an adequate supply of wholesome, nutritious food.
